#MadeAtLeiths: Meg Morrison on finding her calling

As part of our #MadeAtLeiths series, Meg Morrison, a hospitality consultant and former super-yacht Head Chef, shares her Leiths journey.

I finished school aged 16 with grades in Art and English and decided to travel to America.

Eventually, I landed a role as waitress in Florida, within a grand hotel and soon fell in love with the fire and creativity of the kitchen. I found my calling.

Leiths was the only one place I wanted to learn due to the curriculum, teacher calibre and practical training for professionally cooking. I proudly received my Advanced Diploma in 1998.

I was a young misfit and the discipline, care and expertise from the teachers not only gave me knowledge and skills to cook, but self-confidence and a career path forward.

I also learned about teamwork and made long-standing friendships at Leiths – bonding over stopping Sarah from tipping her soup down the sink by accident and in return her pointing out I had picked up the salt tub instead of sugar when making an apple tart together!

After cooking in kitchens in London and San Francisco, I become head chef on the world’s highest profile super-yachts for ten years, followed by gaining a First-Class Honours Degree in Hospitality that I would never have thought I could achieve when I was 16.

Now I live in Chelsea with my young family. I run Meg Morrison Hospitality Consultancy, investing and helping others develop successful restaurants, food products and pop-ups.

My culinary training has opened up doors to working with incredible people, all over the world.

If you are starting out, remember age is only a number. Educate yourself. Practice, collaborate, be brave, fail and get up and always believe in your special creativity.
