We’re looking for a tech-savvy Social Media and Marketing Assistant to join our busy marketing team.

Social Media and Marketing Assistant

Contract type: Fixed term for one year

Salary: £23,000, full time, 9am – 5pm

Leiths School of Food and Wine are looking for a new Social Media and Marketing Assistant. The ideal candidate with be full of creative energy, flexible and adaptable, with a keen eye for detail. We are looking for someone who will keep content standards high, engage with customers online, and continue to find new ways to develop our social media presence and keep things interesting, bringing our authoritative cookery training to new audiences. We are also looking for someone who likes technology and who is able to master new software reasonably quickly; we will provide training on using Craft, Hootsuite, Campaign Monitor, Facebook Analytics and Google Analytics and then expect the candidate to use these tools on a regular basis. Intelligence, creativity and the desire to keep learning are more important than extensive experience. This is an ideal first or second role for a graduate looking to learn new skills, boost their CV and work for a fantastic creative brand. The successful candidate will join our knowledgeable, supportive three-person marketing team. They will work in a friendly, collaborative environment, where new ideas are welcomed from staff at all levels.   • Degree or diploma in journalism, English, digital media or marketing
  • Brief portfolio of work showcasing copywriting, photography and social media skills
  • A love of good food


  • Experience working in social media, digital marketing or PR
  • Formal or informal cookery training or food industry experience

Job Description: Social Media and Marketing Assistant

Social Media

Create well written, interactive, authoritative content for our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. Make people want to try our recipes at home!

Chat to customers who message us through social media or comment on our posts and ensure they have a good experience.

Develop new ways to engage with Leiths alumni on social media.

Develop our Pinterest page.

Take well-shot photographs and broadcast live videos from Leiths classes, courses and events.

Join in with viral trends.

Frequently think up new ways to reach new audiences.

Stay up to date with food trends by reading the food press and exploring food markets and new restaurants when time allows.

Support partnerships by working on joint social media projects with outside organisations, led by the PR and Communications Officer.

Ensure that posts on social media are in line with the overall marketing plan set by the Marketing Manager, so that creative activities are steered by commercial priorities.

Write a simple monthly report showing social media engagement and traffic creation (training will be provided).

Content creation

Assist on photoshoots for Leiths magazines, adverts and brochures, and on video filming days for Leiths video content.

Style dishes so they are visually appealing, engaging the senses.

Take on tasks such as ironing uniforms and sourcing crockery to ensure videos look polished.

Shop for ingredients, gather props and help clear up.

Occasionally direct the photo shoot, ensuring the shot-list is achieved.


Write short, fun, readable articles about food trends, restaurants, cookery techniques and more for Leiths Magazine.

Write compelling, quirky, fresh emails to Leiths customers.

Source images and use Campaign Monitor to send out marketing emails (training will be provided).

Edit articles submitted by contributors so they meet Leiths standards.

Proof read and fact check brochures, magazines, advertorials and website copy.


Perform frequent checks on Leiths.com, including removing old class menus after the class takes place, ensuring classes and courses are easy to find and appear in the right section, and ensuring copy and images remain fresh and appealing.

Spend two weeks every six months uploading the course and class programme to Booking Live and Leiths.com (training will be provided).

Quickly action emails from the Operations Director requesting changes to the website.

Leiths blog: Manage contributors and edit their writing, ensuring blogs are interesting, uploaded frequently, easy to read, and accompanied by high quality images.


Ensure social media posts and marketing emails are logged on a central spreadsheet, allowing the Registrar and the Operations Director to understand which classes and courses have received marketing attention.

Ensure social media posts and marketing emails focus on any classes or courses that need filling, by checking bookings information provided by the Finance Manager.

Represent the Marketing Manager at a number of internal meetings, ensuring our actions and plans are communicated across the business.

Share their weekly ‘To Do List’, allowing the Marketing Manager to help prioritise where needed.


Be present at all Leiths events, from open evenings to celebrity chef demonstrations. This is likely to include four or five evenings and one or two Saturdays per year.

Take an active role in set-up as required.

Look after social media at events.


Assist the receptionist in responding to customer brochure requests.

Print letters and stuff envelopes for mail-outs to schools, embassies, press and other organisations.

Prepare goodie bags for events.

Send surveys to customers who complete Leiths classes and courses and collate the results.

Assist the Marketing Manager with additional administrative tasks as required.
