Due to the coronavirus outbreak Leiths has made the difficult decision to cancel all planned courses (except our online courses) until the end of June. In these exceptional circumstances all students who have booked places on our courses will be offered the opportunity to cancel or reschedule their course. If you are currently in the process of taking a multi-part course, you will be offered new dates to complete the course later in the year. Of course we will be dealing with a high volume of calls and emails and we thank you for your understanding and patience during this unsettling time. Calling all food-loving teens!

Would you love to know how to make a light, crispy pizza from scratch, bubbling with cheese and covered in your own creative toppings?

How about chopping like a real chef (safely!) or baking brownies that might just win a Paul Hollywood handshake?

Well, we’re excited to say that now’s your chance. We’ve been busy cooking up an interactive digital cookery course that you can take in your very own home!

Brighten up lockdown

If you’re a foodie aged 13-18, this brilliant new course is an ideal way to make the most of your time indoors. In recognition of the situation we all find ourselves in, we are offering a temporary discount of £100, leaving you a little more to spend on ingredients.

Fill your kitchen with enticing smells

Here at Leiths we really love food, so you can be sure that everything you cook will be delicious.

You’ll whip up pavlovas and blueberry crumble cakes, a Mexican chilli with spicy guacamole, a classic fish pie topped with crispy filo pastry, and many more family-friendly dishes including the ultimate brunch.

This course runs over six units, released weekly, which includes an introductory unit covering knife skills and kitchen safety. There will be about three hours of cooking each week after the introduction, so you’ll have plenty of time to practise, and you can schedule the cooking times to suit you.

Each recipe serves four to six people, so you can take over the kitchen and give the resident chef a break, and you’ll be learning good kitchen hygiene too!

Every weekly unit is divided into different cooking sessions, and if you cook them all together, you’ll be able to serve everyone a fantastic menu.

Digital learning at home, with a Leiths mentor on hand

Our Teen Toolbox is really quite special; it’s all taught via the slick, user-friendly Workshop app, yet it allows you to access the world-class cookery training we’ve perfected at Leiths over 45 years.

Developed with learning in mind, the Workshop app is easy to navigate and fun to use. You’ll be sent shopping lists in advance, so you can be prepared, and as you’re cooking the app pauses automatically when you need to complete a task. On screen, our teachers will explain each technique and demonstrate every step, so you’ll really understand what you’re doing.

Can’t quite perfect a technique? Message your Leiths mentor and they’ll explain how it’s done; they will also be there to offer encouragement and praise.

Simply prop up your phone or tablet and get cooking; you’ll be amazed by how quickly you learn.

Expert support, tried-and-tested methods

This course is the closest you can get to being in the Leiths kitchens, without leaving the house.

As you cook along with the app, you can complete each step in your own time. Message your Leiths mentor if you need to; they’ll be on hand to offer guidance and answer your questions. You’ll be taught by the same teachers who lead our world-famous culinary Diploma, so you’ll be in very good hands.

You’ll share also pictures of your cooking with your classmates and mentor, and send everyone messages of support.

This really is learning for life; whether you’re inviting friends over for dinner, cooking healthy midweek meals, or rustling up a proper breakfast, you’ll use these skills again and again.

And don’t worry, we know it’s not easy to get every ingredient during lockdown, so we’re ready to suggest other options.

This course is exclusively for students aged 13-18. By booking a place, you agree that the student who will be taking this course is aged 13-18, has their parent or guardian’s consent to sign up to Workshop and will have adult supervision throughout the duration of the course. Any students breaking these rules risk being removed from the course without refund.

What you'll learn Teen Cookery Toolbox: Online Course


COURSE SUMMARY

This 6-week course will guide young chefs through all of the fundamental cooking skills, techniques and practices that you need to continue following your passion for high-quality, delicious food.

Each week, you will unlock a new batch of video-based sessions that take you step-by-step through the process of cooking everything from filo fish pie to delicious chocolate brownies. With Workshop’s unique hands-on method of learning, you’ll be cooking from day one with no need to read pages of theory in advance.

By joining the course, you will have access to the following through the Workshop app:

  • 6 units, unlocked weekly, guiding you through ~2 hours of cooking time each week
  • 12 individual cooking sessions
  • Expert guidance and one-to-one support from your class mentor
  • Collaborative group chat with your own private class and mentor
  • Feedback on your dishes from your class and mentor via a private in-app feed of photo uploads
  • A Certificate of Completion after you complete everything on the course

In addition to the core aspects of the course, you will also get:

  • Downloadable Leiths recipes and theory notes for you to keep
  • Access to all video sessions for 12 months from your start date


HOW IT WORKS

Average cooking time: 3 hours per week

  1. At the start of each week, you will be prompted to schedule 1-5 practical sessions and to gather all the kit you’ll need to start cooking.
  2. In every session, you will follow a Leiths teacher through a series of step-by-step videos in your own kitchen, learning directly through your experience.
  3. After each session, you will be asked to upload photos of your creations for discussion and feedback from your classmates and mentor.
  4. Once you have completed all sessions on the course, you will earn your Certificate of Completion.

  1. Kitchen Intro: Health & Safety, Knife Skills – Caramelised Onion Hummus and Crudites
  2. Filo Fish Pie, Minty Peas and Greens – Blueberry, Lemon and Almond Crumble Cake
  3. Pan Pizza and Sauce Pizzaiola – Vanilla Panna Cotta, Steeped Berries and Crumble
  4. Spanish Chicken, Chorizo and Red Pepper Tray Bake – Pavlovas with Lemon Curd Cream and Raspberries
  5. Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Chilli Con Carne – Delicious Chocolate Brownies
  6. Weekend Brunch: Granola, American Style Pancakes, Smoothies and Frittata Muffins

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Please be aware that, because you're learning in your own home, you will be required to purchase your own ingredients for each unit.

A 'kit list' of ingredients will be made available to you at the beginning of each session so that you can plan ahead. If you're unable to find specific ingredients, advice on alternatives can be provided on request.

You will need access to a well-stocked kitchen, including at least a double hob (two rings) and an oven, preferably with a grill. In order to access the course content, you will need a smartphone or tablet and the Workshop app. Other equipment such as a food processor and electric hand whisk are thoroughly recommended. A comprehensive list of everything you will need for the course will be sent to you ahead of the start date.
